Did He Try to Get Me Back? What Happened When I Left a Married Man

The question I keep getting: did he ever try to get me back?

It shows up in my DMs more than almost anything else. Did he ever try to come back? Did he ever try to change your mind? Did he fight for you?

The answer is no. He didn't.

When I ended my relationship with a married man, he didn't come back and he didn't chase me. I have plenty of theories about why, but I'll never know for sure, because I'm not him. What I can tell you is why I think people ask. Some are just curious about that part of the story. But a lot of you are asking because you're in something like it right now, and the idea of leaving terrifies you.

Why leaving is scary when you've spent years waiting to be chosen

Here's what makes ending this kind of relationship so hard. The entire time you're in it, you're waiting to be chosen. You're measuring up. You're asking yourself if you're enough, if you're giving him everything he needs.

So when you finally end it and he doesn't come running after you, it doesn't just hurt. It becomes one more piece of evidence that you weren't chosen. That's the fear underneath the question. People want me to say he begged me to stay and I held my ground. That's not how my story went.

What actually happened after I left a married man I loved

We'd broken up once before I ended it for good. That time only lasted a few days before he called and said he didn't want to lose me. I hoped it was the turning point. It wasn't. We landed right back where we'd been.

Then one morning I woke up at my wits' end, tired of waiting, and I ended it. This time there was no call. We texted for a couple of days because going from talking every day to nothing is disorienting, and then we both stopped. About four months later, a little drunk in the bathtub, I sent him a song. I reopened the door, not him. We drifted back into periodic contact, saw each other a couple more times, and then it faded. My last email never got a reply. Now it's been years.

Why he didn't fight for me, and why it wasn't about my worth

When it came down to it, he told me that if I was asking him to make a decision right then, he couldn't. I told him I'd given him years. There was nothing left I could do.

That's the trap with a married man. He can't fully choose you, because he's already chosen someone else on paper. So you live inside a permanent question mark. His not coming back said more about what he was able to give than about whether I was worth staying for. I still believe he loved me. I think I'm one of the great loves of his life. But sometimes love isn't enough, and I spent a long time believing it would be.

Leaving to be chased isn't a plan. Knowing your worth is.

If you're ending a relationship because you think it'll make him come chase you, I'd stop right there. That's not a reason to leave. That's another way of waiting to be chosen.

You leave because you finally believe you deserve more. You leave because your self-worth doesn't live inside that relationship. It's yours, and yours alone, to claim. The real win is getting to the point where you know that so deep down that you won't settle for a man who can only give you part of himself. Whether or not he ever comes back stops being the measure of anything.

FAQ

Did he ever try to get me back after I ended it?

No. When I ended my relationship with a married man, he didn't chase me or fight to keep me. We texted briefly, drifted into years of silence, and I've made peace with that.

Why didn't he fight for me when I left?

I can't know for certain, because I'm not him. What I do know is that a married man can't fully choose you, and his not coming back said more about what he could give than about my worth.

Should I leave a married man to make him choose me?

Leaving to force him to chase you isn't a plan. If you leave, do it because you know you deserve a man who can choose you one hundred percent of the time, not because you're betting on him coming back.

How do you leave a married man you still love?

You accept that love alone isn't always enough, and that waiting to be chosen is not the same as being loved. You leave when you finally believe your self-worth is yours to claim, whether or not he ever returns.

Does he still love me if he didn't come back?

He might. I believe the man I loved really did love me. But loving someone and being able to choose them fully are two different things, and you deserve both.
